It was pleasant and it was unforgettable.Tickets go on sale. There were no awkward breaks or digressions, it was a straight live performance of his discography. He appealed to our tastes and read the audience well as he went through the set list. He engaged us, and we faithfully listened. Mac was incredibly charming and charismatic.
It was evident that we were all Mac Demarco fans, and not just at a concert for the hell of it. Besides a few cheers when a new song began, the crowd was filled with Mac’s lyrics as everyone was able to sing along. The crowd was just as enthralled as I was. It was so imperceptibly similar, I sometimes forgot I was at a live venue. It may sound overdramatic, but his live music sounds incredibly similar to his studio work. It was my own perception that sped up the show because it was so similar to listening to a studio version of his songs. In fact, they played almost their entire discography. The show was over quick, and not because Mac and his band played only a few songs. He just came up with his guitar and began to play. But Mac came out very calmly, addressed the audience, and began to play. I waited in the crowd and imagined Mac and his band in the back slamming beers and doing coke. Despite his aloof demeanor, Mac Demarco has serious musical talent.Įven though I knew Mac Demarco wrote and composed his own songs, I could not imagine how he would perform on stage. He is a multi-instrumentalist through and through. It was not until I saw a clip of his music making progress in his Pepperoni Playboy documentary and was incredibly impressed. Frankly, I did not think he even wrote his own songs. To put it simply, he does not seem like the kind of guy that would be making this kind of music. He does not take himself seriously at all. He is unkempt, always smoking a cigarette (viceroy), and something akin to that high school class clown that we all have known. If you see him, you probably couldn’t help but describe him as a hipster bum. I wanted to take a digression to discuss Mac Demarco as a person. I decided to go by myself, because I found that going to concerts with a large group of people usually devolves into a large amount of pregame drinking. Of course, the tickets were only 25 dollars, such is Mac’s style. Anyways, I was fortunate enough to have a chance to see Mac Demarco live in Philadelphia, after the release of his latest studio album Another One. Mac himself describes it as “ Jizz-Jazz”, so we’ll stick with that. I find it really difficult to describe his music when I recommend him to my friends. Mac Demarco has been one of my favorite musicians since his Rock and Roll Night Club EP in 2012. For this reason, my most unforgettable live music experience did not come a huge musical spectacle but instead from an intimate performance by Mac Demarco and his band.
It is about the sentimental value you can place on a song or album. It is about the times you have with your friends while listening to a song. It’s about getting as many people together, yet it seems to be the least personal way to listen to music. These concerts have become more about the spectacle rather than the music. I’m talking about music festivals like Bonnaroo and Firefly. I’m talking about Kanye and his Yeezus tour (Although I’m really jealous I couldn’t go). It’s about growing things to an outrageous scale, to the point that people can’t help but take notice. It seems like nowadays, everything is about being bigger and better.
